Creating a Positive Workplace Environment: Key to Fostering Positive Attitudes
It would mean a positive work culture of openness in communications, mutual respect, and a supportive culture. Kahn, in 1990, suggested that in psychological safety, people would most likely be willing to create or take risks for innovation and more collaboration. HRM must ensure that mechanisms and programs exist to have transparency and feedback across groups to break down silos and teamwork.
Besides, it is relevant to provide a sense of belonging and community building. Feeling valued and part of something is immensely contributing to the rise of job satisfaction in a specific organization. Indeed, the research conducted by Gallup in 2020 showed that employees who felt appreciated were 5 times more likely to be work-engaged. In this way, HR can ensure a sense of belonging by recognizing employee success, engaging in team-building activities, and encouraging an inclusive culture.
Concomitantly, attitudes may be influenced by concern for the welfare of employees. Health and wellbeing programs not only improve the health of the individual, but companies, as Heskett et al. (1994) comment, which are more concerned with employee well-being, tend to show greater satisfaction and retention of employees. Mental and physical health support, for instance, through workshops on stress management or flexible working, can be facilitated through HRM.
In other words, HRM's role is not insignificant in creating a workplace environment that enables the cultivation of positive attitudes in workers. More precisely, if communication, community, and well-being is open, the employee will be more engaged, which has a better impact on overall performance.
